GEM
Introduced in 1905, the Model B Gem Phonograph was Edison's compact
but resourceful Phonograph for the common man. A paneled horn was
soon introduced to lend especially full tone and volume. Our
instrument is equippoed with a historically precise replica "polygonal"
horn and support.
The horn is accurate right down to the correct decal.
However, the foremost feature that makes this Gem so extraordinary is
the fact that it was "Amberolized" back in the day -- in other words,
the original owner added a factory-issued attachment to convert the
instrument to play both 2 and 4-minute cylinder records. Late in 1908
Edison introduced an entirely new type of record, the "Amberol" which
played twice as long as the Edison cylinders previously being sold -- 4
minutes as opposed to 2 minutes. Edison encouraged existing owners of
his Phonographs to convert their machines to play the new records.
Depending on the model, this involved various alterations to the upper
mechanism.
Many Edison owners did convert. Popular models such as the Standard and
Home frequently may be found with these adaptations. But Gem owners
seldom converted their instruments. For this reason, a 2-and-4
minute adapted Gem Model B is an extreme rarity. Above we see the
"extra" gears that were added to create the ability to play both thypes
of record. You might rightly ask how successfully this rather
diminutive machine will play in the 4-minute mode --- the answer is AMAZINGLY. We
have prepared a video of this machine playing a complete 4-minute
record, and we greatly encourage you to request a copy to be sent to
your cell phone. You will be astounded at how remarkably peppy
this machine is, and how loudly and clearly it plays. One
4-minute record per complete winding. This is completely due to
the fact that at phonophan we know how to restore and adjust these
instruments to the last degree.

equipped with Model C reproducer, for playing in 2-minute mode only,

reproducer, for playing 2-minute AND Model H reproducer for
playing 4-minute, including four records, $995., plus shipping
