EDISON STANDARD PHONOGRAPH

This instrument was originally sold in 1905. The date can be pinpointed since that was the only year that the improved Model B Standard Phonographs displayed a fancy gold banner decal on the front of the cabinedt. Starting in 1906, the decal would be simplified to read merely "Edison." Of all the Standard models, the 1905 version is considered one of the rariest and most beautiful, the lovely chocolate color of the wood is incompatable.
A few years later, the owner decided to "update" his machine by adding all the new features that were being introduced at the time -- it was a period when technology was developing quickly. This was near the end of the life cycle of the Edison external horn cylinder Phonograph. Having begun in around 1890, the Phonograph was about to undergo big changes as the second decade of the 20th Century dawned. The evolution had been complete, from the early "straight" horns that were supported IN FRONT of the instruments, to the elegant and graceful Cygnet horns (as above) that were delicately suspended ABOVE the mechanical works -- and, finally, the horn would be concealed INSIDE the cabinet after 1913.
When the original owner decided to "update" his machine, he added both 4-minute gearing (to accommodate the up-to-date "4-minute" cylinder records) and the stylish Cygnet horn. The Cygnet horn has been carefully preserved, its original paint in fine condition-- you can even see the very thin gold lines that run down the inside seam of each panel. Cygnet horns are not always so nice-- the paint is very susceptible to aging when stored in an attic or barn. This is why it is so thrilling to see one in such great condition. Furthermore--- the components most frequently lost and separated from the instrument, the horn support hardware, are ORIGINAL, not reproduction!

Here we see the sparkling clean upper works, prominently featuring the optional gears (left) that converted the instrument to play BOTH 2 AND 4-minute cylinder records (see reproducer options below). All grease, grime, gunk, goo and grunge has been removed. We LITERALLY removed every single screw, bearing, part and piece to clean and regulate and reassemble. PLUS we installed a brand new mainspring-- plenty of power to play your records. Compare this to the wretched, misrepresented junk you find on eBay and you'll understand why our instruments are the best.
The original gold banner is excellent. You can appreciate why this special 1905 version is thought of so highly by collectors and novices alike!
A GREAT advantage of the Cygnet horn machines--- the horn may be left in place while the lid is put on to keep out dust.

This instrument is beautifully restored, squeaky clean, completely tuned and adjusted. Our spic-and-span Edison is a far cry from the trash you see available in online auctions. Many people hope to find a "hidden gem" bargain, but remember this -- any money you think you save will be lost, and then some, correcting the mistakes and omissions of online amateurs.
