Edison
Fireside Phonograph

The "Fireside" model was introduced in 1909 as an improved version of
the venerable Edison "Standard." This particular instrument
is the Model A, an instrument capable of playing either type of
cylinder record offered at the time -- records that lasted for
"2-minutes" and those that played for "4-minutes." What
distinguishes this particular machine is that it is marvelously
preserved "all of a piece," as the old sayig goes. In other
words, not only are all the components original, but they all match
each other in condition -- the original-finish oak cabinet, the
spotless upper works with fancy decoration, glistening like polished
ebony, the horn with original paint and decals. Yes,
the
machine shows us that it is practically 120 years old, but it
remains bright, and the evidence of age fits in with
the
overall original complexion -- even the horn support is original, where
reproductions are almost always the case from other sellers.
What
we do at phonophan is
something no other sellers can do -- they lack the talent and the
artistic skill to perform a correct
and historically
perfect
top-to-bottom restoration such as you see here. We have had
ample opportunities to examine the work of
other sellers or their henchmen -- there is always somnething
jury-rigged or
incorrect.

An important strength of the Cygnet type of horn is that it can stay in
place, and the lid can be put on the machine. The "Cygnet"
(swan's neck) horn
was an Edison innovation that got
the horn up, over the top of the machine. The rule in acoustic
phonographs is
"bigger horn, bigger sound," so this is a great advantage for those who
really want to listen to and enjoy their records. In fact, without
really trying to calculate the shape of the horn mathematically, the
Edison engineers ended up with a design that allows exponentially
correct reproduction.

The original Edison horn decals.

Spotlessly clean. We
disassembled every single component of the instrument,
cleaned it, calibrated it and made sure it observed the correct
tolerances.

The correctly adjusted motor. As an example of its power,
it will play one 4-minute record per winding.

Truly spic and span!
What do
you get from other dealers? A couple squirts of WD-40 and a quick
coating of
shoe polish!

Beautifully preserved,
scrupulously clean, completely tuned and adjusted. Original horn finish
and decals. Our genteel Edison is a far
cry from the filthy,
badly regulated trash you see available in online auctions. The neat,
compact oak
cabinet can be closed to keep out dust. In short -- buy
from phonophan,
we have 55 years of experience, we actually know what we're talking
about, we
don't just
talk the talk -- we sweat all the details. Phonophan gives you the
flat-out best service on the
planet!
